Neurological Manifesto Of Hypothyroidism

Meet Hef. A five-year-old male Sheltie. He came to our clinic the day before with complaints of hoarseness and front leg limping. Bu today, his hindlegs are completely paralized. His family said that he couldn’t walk after he had jumped off the sofa. Tomorrow he will have an MRI so we can find out whether it is hernia or something different. We will update you about his condition. Wish Hef Luck! 1. Update (21.02.2015) We got Hef’s MRI results. There’s good news and bad news. Yesterday at 10pm Hef was sedated and then had an MRI scan of his head, cervical spine and lumbar spine. Despite his medical condition everything went quite well during the prosedure that took almost one hour. By the way, special thanks to our dear friend Mehmet Küçük who helped us with the prosedure. According to the MRI results, there is no sign of a pathology in his nervous system. This is good news. The bad news is, on the other hand, that we think Hef might have an ottoimune polymyositis. We are going to send his scans to USA and consult the specialists to make sure. Fingers crossed! 2. Update (24.02.2015)
Greetings from Hef! Finally, he’s taking tiny steps :) We sent his MRI scans to USA to consult the specialists there. They confirmed us, there is no pathalogy in his nervous system. We think that his condition is caused by hypothyroidism considering his low thyroid levels. Now he is receiving cortisone treatment and walks little by little. On the other hand, his liver enzymes are elevated due to the cortisone use and he developed a stereotype hepatitis. We worry about that his walking will get worse again if we quit the cortisone. We’ll update you about his progress. Wish him luck! 3. Update (28.02.2015)
Hef walks! Hef’s walking progresses day by day. Although we quitted steroid therapy his walking has not got worse which confirms our diagnosis that his walking problem was a neuromuscular manifestation of hypothyroidism. His liver enzymes levels have been going down to the normal values which ensures us that the liver problem is due to the steroid use. We’ll all breathe a sigh of relief when his test results get normal. Way to go Hef! You can see his progress from beginning to end on www.adaveteriner.com/hef/ 4. Update (03.03.2015)
Hef is discharged Please watch the video and see his happiness when he hears his mother. His walking has recovered. Liver enzymes and thyroid levels are all normal. Hope to see you again Hef! But do not fall ill, come only to visit us :)
